KaTeker is published under GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE.
This is experimental software. Use at your own risk.
If you apply or install this software you accept the disclaimer.
This beta release of KaTeker is tested on SuSE Linux 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and Knoppix 3.4.
It is possible to run KaTeker of the box:
download
unpack
instant start KaTeker
Download the actual KaTeker tarball. The archive will be named KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27.tgz .
If you are using a file manger like KDE Konqueror click the archive KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27.tgz and copy the folder KaTeker_version 0.95 RELEASE_2005_03_27 into any directory.
Or use an archiver program like ark.
Or open a terminal window and type the command
tar xzf path_to/KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27.tgz
This creates the directory KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27 in the current directory.
If you are using a file manger like KDE Konqueror open the folder
(directory) KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27 .
Start KaTeker simply
clicking
kateker.
KaTeker will be used by the root user or a user in the root group normally. This is because in most cases only root can access the data of several user and system data. Although KaTeker will run with normal user rights e.g. for testing. There can be restrictions accessing devices like CDROM or CD recorder. Another problem can be the access rights to some elements synchronizing concurrent invocations of KaTeker. See Known bugs for further information. If you got access rights problems try to run KaTeker as root. This will result in a bit more complex setup procedure and requires that root got access rights to the X-server.
Delete the Save_Root, the directory holding the backup archives (in most cases $HOME/Save ) and delete the configuration file $HOME/.kateker.conf .
There can be problems to access the X-server when running root. In most cases a terminal started by an user and changing to root by su may not work because of access rights to the X-server. If you can start any X-program ( xterm ) there will be no problem.
There are several solutions:
on KDE start KaTeker immediately:
kdesu
/path/to/KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27/KaTeker/bin/tkateker
on KDE use:
kdesu xterm
use ssh:
ssh -X -l root
localhost xterm
or
ssh
-Y -l root localhost xterm
use xhost: run as normal user ( not root )
xhost
+localhost
su
xterm -display localhost:0.0
Running KaTeker for testing is no problem. The problem is that you are learning to use and configure KaTeker. It is a good idea to throw away the data saved while testing. This is simply deleting all data under the Save_Root, the directory holding the backup data. The configuration in the file /root/.kateker.conf should be deleted too.
To start KaTeker type as normal user or root:
cd path_to/KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27 KaTeker/tkateker
and KaTekers GUI starts. The fist dialog will be the setup dialog.
Delete the Save_Root, the directory holding the backup archives and delete the configuration file /root/.kateker.conf .
Moving the mouse over an element of the kateker window, a balloon help is displayed. The status line at the bottom of the window shows the same message. The balloon help can be enabled or disabled by the Balloon button at the left top of the window.
The Help button on the upper right corner is context sensitive, i.e. opens the help page associated to the actual dialog.
Starting KaTeker the first time you have to configure KaTeker. There is a quick set up instruction guiding you through the first steps.
The backup of data should be done carefully. If you want to use KaTeker to save important data I suggest to read the documentation initially. This page is only for those which want to test KaTeker initially. The documentation is HTML you can use an browser to read it.
This Software is provided as it is without warranty of any kind. If install KaTeker or any part of it is assumed, you agree with the disclaimer.
To install KaTeker follow the installation instruction, please. KaTeker uses some other software. If you installed perl, cdrecord and sudo and got it running there should be no problem to run KaTeker. ;-)
If you are using a file manger like KDE Konqueror open then folder
(directory) KaTeker_RELEASE_2005_03_27 .
Start KaTeker
