KaTeker uses standard archivers to save the data. This is that the data saved can be restored also when KaTeker is not available.
KaTeker supports the archivers
tar
dar
The archiver tar is well known and installed on almost all Linux
systems. It is optimized saving data onto tapes.
The advantage of
tar is:
well known command
on almost Linux system available
The disadvantage of tar is:
using difference backup, deleted (renamed, moved) files will be restored
if a compressed (zipped) tar archive is damaged, all files stored behind the first error are lost
DAR is not designed to be used by programs wrapping the dialogs with DAR. DAR uses low-level communication via terminal. Wrapping this leads to instable behavior of KaTeker.
The archiver dar is optimized saving data onto disks.
The
advantage of dar is:
optimized saving data onto disks
using difference backup, deleted (renamed, moved) files will not be restored
if a compressed (zipped) dar archive is damaged, only one or some files are concerned
The disadvantage of dar is:
dar may not installed on a minimal system, thus when
running a recovery session you may not recover the backup.
You
should install dar onto the recovery system.
dar is much slower than tar.
Dar is available at http://dar.linux.free.fr .
KaTeker supports only dar.
If you used DAR all data saved by an former version of KaTeker is not changed by this version but ignored. You can access it by the old version of KaTeker but don't update or master.
