Suggestion : button suggested to click next when setting up
the first time
If you are setting up KaTeker the first time reading the pages Quick set up and First dialog can be helpful.
There are three main parameters. The save name is used the identify media belonging to this backup. The save root is the directory with the backup data and the repository of the contents of media with saved backup archives. It is recommended to use for this data a hard disk of its own, not only a partition. This is important when a hard disk crashes. If the data saved and the save are on the same hard disk both the save and the data will be lost in case of a hard dick crash. KaTeker requires the save name and the save root. The create root is required when data shall be saved onto CDR(W).
The save name identifies the backup an its media. It is a good idea to use the name of the computer and the user. A name is a sequence of characters and numbers. There can be one colon in the middle of the name. The save name will be suggested when KaTeker is started the first time. Use the <Set save name> button to save it.
If you start KaTeker the first time there a suggestion in the input field of the save root. If you started KaTeker as normal user this will be the directory $HOME/Save. You can choose another directory using the <Select save root> button. It starts the "Directory select" dialog.
Click the <Set save root> button to define the save root finally. If tkateker is called the first time, the backup sets are generated. This can take up to some minutes. A dialog comes up showing the progress and the result of this process. There can be also some hints on problems. For more information see the page Generated backup sets.
The create root is a directory for temporary data. It will be used when you save backup data onto CD. The create root will hold the data of the whole CD i.e. up to 800MB. You can use /tmp but for security reasons it is better to use a subdirectory of /tmp as suggested when KaTeker is started the first time. Click the <Set create root> button to define the create root.
The settings are not saved into the configuration. They are still temporary. The settings are temporary until the main <Save configuration> button is clicked. The main <Save configuration> button is highlighted when there are temporary settings.
