Saving Data

Saving Data onto CDs is cheep and secure. Most computers are equipped with a CD recorder. KaTeker uses the software cdrecord to save data onto CDs. If you never used cdrecord on your system it is a good idea to check whether your system supports recording CDs. In most cases KaTeker will identify the CD recorder automatically. Use the dialog "Setup -> CD recorder".

If you never recorded CDs on your system, try to save data onto CDR using the <Master/Update> dialog of the KaTeker GUI but be aware of failing the process or - in seldom cases - the system crashes. In many cases this is not a problem of KaTeker but the software used, unsuitable configuration or unsuitable hardware.

Need some help

KaTeker uses Jörg Schillings cdrecord to save backup data onto CDR(W). Unfortunately the versions of cdrecord and the versions provided by SuSE change its output when analyzing the system and searching for CDR, CDRW, and DVD devices.

The page Need some help describes some commands to check cdrecord on your system. You can help to improve KaTeker running those commands and sending the results to kateker@dr-kuhlmann-software.de . This is important, if KaTeker cannot detect your CDR(W) device. Thank you.

Side effects and system crashes

To avoid system crashes while recording CDs you should read the page Side effects with other software. It describes that some software can access the CD recorder device concurrent to cdrecord. This can raise a hard system crash.
